I read this as two people coming together to share love but are intensely afraid of it. Are these two people connecting on a level that disolves there fears and provides a "true" love for both of them OR is this song about a temporary coming together to provide temporary relieve from their fear and pain. I get the impression that he wants to give her the love she wants on a permanent basis OR is he telling her "no strings attached" , "no hidden catch" meaning that she can trust his love or just offering her temporary relief without any emotions attachments.

I think the true meaning of love is just non-obligatory, not "egoism together" as described falling in love by Erich Fromm. "no strings attached" , "no hidden catch" means that we have to offer enough freedom to our lover to be in true love with him/her. Otherwise our love always will be vulnerable under the strings of our lover that restrict our freedom. When you fall in love, you want your partner to be faithful to you because if they are not it threatens your loneliness again. They might leave you, and leave you alone. This is possessiveness which kills true love. Compare this: Kahlil Gibran love quote: "If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. And if they don't, they never were." or this: "But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls."
