A founding and current member, Matin is a songwriter, lyricist, singer, guitarist, and keyboardist. Martin was born on July 23, 1961 in Essex England. 
In 1980, Martin met Andrew Fletcher at a club and he was soon recruited into his and Vince Clarke's band, Composition of Sound. Shortly thereafter the band discovered David Gahan at a local Jam session, invited him to join the band, and renamed the band Depeche Mode.
Martin is perhaps best known for writing the songs Pesonal Jesus and Everything Counts.
He divorced his wife Suzanne Boisvert in 2006 and they have three children - Viva Lee, Ava Lee and Calo Leon.
He currently resides in Santa Barbara, California, US.
