The main version has 2 CDs. The limited edition version has the same two CDs, plus a bonus CD with mostly new remixes. There's also a one-CD release with selections from all three discs. The booklet, found in all three versions, features an essay by Paul Morley. A special "Secret Website" can be unlocked with the CDs. During the promotion of the limited three-CD edition of Remixes 81–04, the above mentioned site was launched for fans who bought the bundle which featured exclusive goodies. Also, there was a special digital download-only bundle entitled Remixes 81–04: Rare Tracks, which is now offline for all songs except one listed below, accompanied with official artwork (though still available for download) so users who bought the entire bundle could burn the tracks to a 99min CD-R (the whole album lasts 88:32) and print the artwork as well if they desired to so they could make a pressed CD-like version. Starting at the beginning - how did these chaps meet up?

Depeche Mode's origins trace back to 1977, when Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher formed a band called "No Romance In China", with Clarke on vocals/guitar and Fletcher on bass.

In 1978, Clarke played guitar in an "Ultravox rip-off band", The Plan, with school friend Robert Marlow on vocals and Vince on guitar/keyboards. In 1979, Marlow, Gore, Clarke and another friend Paul Redmond formed a band called "The French Look", Marlow on vocals/keyboards, Gore on guitar, Clarke and Redmond on keyboards. In March 1980, Clarke, Gore and Fletcher formed a band called "Composition of Sound", with Clarke on vocals, Gore on keyboards and Fletcher on bass. "The French Look" and "Composition of Sound" once played live together in June 1980 at St. Nicholas School Youth Club in Southend on sea, Essex. (editor’s aside – wouldn’t you kill for this footage?)

Soon after the formation of "Composition of Sound", Clarke and Fletcher switched to synthesizers (it was just a matter of time), working odd jobs to buy them. Gahan joined in 1980 after Clarke heard him perform at a local scout session, crooning to a rendition of David Bowie's 'Heroes', and "Depeche Mode" was born. The new name was taken from a French fashion magazine, "Dépêche mode", which translates to "Fashion Update" or "Fashion News Dispatch" (dépêche = dispatch) though it has commonly been mistranslated as "Fast Fashion", due to the confusion with the French verb "se dépécher" ("to hurry up").

While playing a live gig at the Bridge House in Canning Town, the band was approached by Daniel Miller (an electronic musician and founder of Mute Records), who was interested in them recording a single for his burgeoning label. The result of this verbal contract was "Dreaming of Me b/w Ice Machine", which was released in February 1981, and managed to reach #57 in the UK charts. Encouraged by this surprise success, the band recorded its second single "New Life", climbing to #11 in the UK charts. Three months later, the band released "Just Can't Get Enough" - their first single to enter the UK Top 10, peaking at #8. This record was in many ways a breakthrough for the band, and its success paved the way for their debut album - Speak & Spell, released in November 1981, and eventually reaching #10 on the UK album charts.

During the touring and promotion for Speak & Spell, Clarke began to privately voice his discomfort at the direction the band was taking. He later expressed his agitation that "there was never enough time to do anything".

In late 1981, Clarke publicly announced that he was leaving Depeche Mode. Soon afterwards, he joined with blues singer Alison Moyet to form Yazoo (Yaz in the US) and later, the duo Erasure with Andy Bell, in 1985.

With their primary songwriter gone, Depeche Mode needed a new direction. Martin Gore, who had written "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Big Muff" for their debut album, took over as the band's new songwriter.

In January 1982, the band released "See You", their first single without Clarke, which against all expectations, managed to beat all three Clarke-penned singles in the UK charts, reaching #6. In the ensuing months of that year, two more singles were released ("The Meaning of Love", and "Leave in Silence"), and the band embarked on their first world tour - known as the "See You" tour. Their second album A Broken Frame was eventually brought out in September.

In late 1981, the band placed an ad in Melody Maker stating "Keyboard player needed for established band - no timewasters." Alan Wilder, a 22-year old keyboardist from West London responded - and after two auditions with Daniel Miller, he was accepted as the fourth member of Depeche Mode. Despite this, Daniel Miller informed Wilder that he was not needed for the recording of the album, as the band wanted to prove that they could succeed without Vince Clarke. Wilder's first musical contribution to the band was in 1983, on the non-album single "Get the Balance Right!".

For their third LP Construction Time Again, Depeche Mode decided to work with producer Gareth Jones, at John Foxx's Garden Studios and at Hansa Studios in West Berlin, which had been used by David Bowie and Brian Eno before, and where the Berlin Wall with guarding soldiers could be seen right from the mixer, this creating an extraordinary atmosphere. The album saw a dramatic shift in the group's sound, due in part to the introduction of the Synclavier and Emulator samplers, in addition to their previously-used analogue synths.

Interesting notes:
This song was the first Depeche Mode single to have more than one remix. There is the single, the "Longer" mix and the "Quieter" mix, all released on the "Leave in Silence" single in 1982 on the Mute record label.

It uses more digital music technology compared to to some previous albums likely due to the fact that it was produced by Mark Bell, who produced albums for Björk (Homogenic, Selmasongs and Medulla) and LFO (Frequencies, Advance and Sheath)

Ultra is Depeche Mode's ninth full album, which was released on April 15, 1997. The album is the first album after the departure of Alan Wilder, who left to focus on his solo efforts. The long time that separates this album from the previous was due to David Gahan's near suicide in August 1995 and recovery from a drug addiction in May 1996, after being declared dead for two minutes.

Important 'notes':

At the time of its release in the US, Personal Jesus' was the biggest selling 12" single in Warner Music history.

Important 'notes':

The album is lighter in tone and melody than their later work, a direction which is likely due to Vince Clarke's writing. After he left, Martin Gore took over songwriting writing almost all of the band's material; later albums written by him would explore ever darker subjects.

Music for the Masses is the sixth album by the band. Released by Mute Records on September 28, 1987, it provided the band with mainstream success in the US for the first time since Some Great Reward.

Critical acclaim: The album became the band's highest-charting in the US upon its release, reaching #35 on the Billboard 200. It also contained more hit singles than any of their previous releases. While there was no hugely popular single from the album, the three singles that were released all made it onto the Hot 100.

At the end of Pimpf is a short 30 second instrumental track named "Interlude #1: Mission Impossible". On the CD, there is a 22 second pause in between Pimpf and Interlude 1, followed by a 30 second pause in between Interlude 1 and Agent Orange.
The last track, "Pleasure, Little Treasure [Glitter Mix]", is listed as "Pleasure, Little Treasure".
This is the first album where at least one song was never played live. "Little 15", "I Want You Now", and "To Have and To Hold", were not played live during the Music for the Masses tour, but the former two were later played acoustically at the World Violation Tour by Martin. A remixed "I Want You Now" appeared at the Exotic Tour. "To Have and To Hold" was thus the only LP song never to be played live until Ultra.

At the beginning of "To Have and To Hold" is a Soviet news presenter saying in Russian, "В докладах рассматривается эволюция ядерных арсеналов и социально-психологические проблемы гонки вооружений" (V dokladah rassmatrivayetsya evolyutsiya yadernykh arsenalov i sotsial'no-psikhologicheskiye problemy gonki vooruzheniy) which means, "The reports consider the evolution of nuclear arsenals and the socio-psychological problems of the arms race". Alan Wilder was not aware of this when he added it to the song.
The breathing sound in "I Want You Now" is actually an accordion being played without a note. The moaning in the song is remembered by Wilder at his website to be some girls hanging around in the studio at the time.

Black Celebration

Black Celebration is the fifth album by the band. Released by Mute Records on March 17, 1986, it established the dark tones set by Alan Wilder earlier on the previous album Construction Time Again. Although none of the singles fared pretty well, Black Celebration holds up well with die hard fans for its darker tones.
